Welcome to The Black Pig Winebar

The list is made up of 300 wines by the bottle with over 100 by the glass. We source from predominantly small artisan vineyards that are sourced directly by Irish wine merchants. We work hard to find the best and most interesting wines at the best possible price which we can then pass on to our customer. This may mean you may not be familiar with some of the vineyards, grape varieties or regions from which they come. We would like the black pig to be a place where people can discover new and exciting wines. We love to recommend and talk about them; please don’t hesitate to ask. We carry over 100 organic, biodynamic and natural wines. Wines that are produced in this way are better for the eco systems which they inhabit and better for the animals and insects that live in those eco systems. The vines are healthier and more resilient and can often produce fruit of more personality and purity, and because these wines are made without any chemicals or inorganic fertilisers, they are better for you as well!

We pour five glasses (150ml) to the bottle for red, white and sparkling.  We price our glass of wine by exact ratio to the bottle which means you don’t lose out when you order by the glass. We pour 75ml for our sweet and fortified wines, same ratio applies.

We use a Verre de Vin system and a Coravin to keep our still and sparkling wines fresh and alive. Please let us know if we have served a glass that is not in top condition, we will be more than happy to open a fresh bottle. If you are unhappy with any glass of wine or bottle we pour please let us know: we will be happy to change it for you.

We use decanters to help open up the flavours of wines. We use specific Riedel glassware which we believe to be the best vessels to swirl, sniff and slurp from.

We are not wine snobs, the black pig is not a fancy place; just a simple place where good friends can relax, eat and drink good food and good wine and create memories for many years to come.

Siobhán, Cass, Arlo & Gavin x

Some Terms

ORGANIC WINE is made from grapes grown organically and without the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticidesfungicides and herbicides.

BIODYNAMIC WINE is made from organically grown grapes powered by the forces at work in nature, the moon and the stars. In addition to this are specific buried preparations and the encouragement of life & biodiversity within the eco systems in which the vines inhabit.

NATURAL WINE is made from organic grapes and are often (though not always) made biodynamically. Natural wines distinguish themselves however by a low interventionist approach on behalf of the wine maker. Nothing is added or taken away with the exception of small amounts of sulphites for stability, often none at all. Wild indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation; fining and filtration is generally avoided; dry farming, manual labour, the traditional method of horse and plough are other examples of the natural approach. Like Biodynamic vineyards, Natural vineyards tend to be part of dynamic bio-systems whether it is fruit orchards, vegetable crops, free ranging live stock or simply nature. Natural wines tend to be low in alcohol, dry, light, refreshing & savoury.

ORANGE WINE is made from white wine grapes that are left to macerate with their skins which impart tannin, grip, structure, colour and flavour to the finished wine. Orange wines tend to be organic and natural.

VIN JAUNE

Vin Jaune ‘Yellow Wine’, is a dry white wine made from late harvest Savignin in the Jura region in the east of France. Aged in oak barrels for 6 years under a voile ‘veil’ of yeast - similar to Sherry - exposed to oxygen, but unfortified. Try with seafood, paté, mushrooms and Comté cheese.

We recommend at least 15 minutes decanting/aeration by the bottle or by the glass to allow the flavours to open up. Served at 15°.
